1. Vestigios (Vestiges)
vestigios.mp3
I tell you there is love
I promise you there is love
In this dry heart
I have a space
A place for two
Vestiges
That the pain
On its way
Forgot to destroy
And I have as proof
An 'I love you' that filtered
Through two tears
That have turned to crystal
And I have as proof
Two arms that await you
And a song
That from that rocking chair
I will sing to you
And I saved for you a morning star
From July, a rainstorm
To wash the sadness from your walk
I swear to you there is love
I promise you there is love
In this dry heart
I have a space
A place for two
Vestiges
That the pain
On its way
Forgot to destroy

3. Si Hay Amor al Otro Lado (If There is Love on the Other Side)
The path becomes shorter
If on the other side
Waits for you
A heart that has a hold on you
A beat that provokes love
You don’t even feel the rocks
If there is love on the other side
Walking can be hard
The step becomes tired
Without fear I have walked
Through the years and through life
There is an end to the road
If there is love on the other side
I have had difficult times
I have gotten lost
And I have cried
Without consolation, I have asked
Without receiving an answer
I don’t care how much it costs
If there is love on the other side
May the shore never end
Lest the river die silent
If the creek dries,
Murmurs and flowers die
May all the pains end
If there is love on the other side

6. Toreando Un Siglo
(Bullfighting a Century)
She insists on staying
And in a friendly challenge
Win the bet with God
She doesn’t believe in that thing
About the flesh being weak
And at 7:00 she goes to bed
That old woman, who,
Instead of walking, limps
She who smiles with a toothless smile
Converts into tenderness
Everything she touches
That old woman who bullfights the century
Jokingly, she assures you
That she spent last night
Dancing and running around
That they are going to put her in a museum
That the golden years are the broach
Never harbor reproaches toward life
Old age is the same as science
The main ingredient is the patience
To draw the sweetness from the melcoche
I have in my little town a relic
That, between puntadas battled the fog
The bun in her hair she perfumes with rosewater
Her semblance is one of ancient features
Grandmother, you are hardheaded warrior
Your stubbornness is a petal of iron
For you I have a love, an old love
I know that

7. Homenaje a Mercedes Sosa
Homage to Mercedes Sosa
Your voice has always been your sword
Your heart was your shield
As if it were marking destiny
Your bombo leguero sounded
Then history opened for you a good path
Your step left a thousand footprints (2x)
The echo that inhabits
Your tender throat
Became a wave
To the ample coasts of my beautiful island
Your passion, like the sea, arrived
Awakened my soul, that walked sleeping
And gave it the gift of song (2x)
Here, for those who suffer
The laws of the constitution have not been written
They take away 600 who weeping await
A macabre deportation
To sing a song for our justice
Will be the mission of the singer
To sing words that speak of justice
Will be the mission of all
Beautiful Tucumana, Beautiful Tucumana
You, the flower of hope
Those who intend to divide the world
Did not count on your love
And never were they able to buy your silence
Teacher, you taught courage
And never were they able to buy your silence
America lives in your voice

8. Coplas a Raul Perez Gonzalez
Verses for Raul Perez Gonzalez
coplas.mp3
After so many absences
Life gave him a treasure
That was worth more than gold
More than all the things he valued
They returned to him his brother
After losing everything
His eyes lit up
Like a little boy, he wept
For years he had searched for him
Through the streets of this world
And he felt in the deepest way
That God had been listening
Finding his brother
Was like water in the desert
Of so many sleepless nights
From sunup to sundown
He waited for him
Those with the hope
Will rise from the dead
His mother said goodbye
One afternoon in the springtime
She left for the stars
To rest from this life
But it was not a farewell
It was something more beautiful
And who knows the uncertain
We are only mortals
But the rosebushes bloomed
When summer awoke
And the brother appeared
To Raul Perez Gonzalez

For freedom we struggle
Flag in hand for dignity
If in this search
We lose our lives

It would not have been in vain

I want to invite you

These verses were originally presented as an exchange of Puerto Rican and Mexican musical traditions between Perez and master troubadour from Guanajuato, Guillermo Velazquez and later adapted as a tribute to the indigenous women of Mexico during a trip to Chiapas.

12. Yo Parí Una Luchadora (I Gave Birth to a Fighter)
fighter.mp3
If you were to see my daughter
You would be reminded of the saying
He who stands near a good tree
Will be sheltered by good shade
Like gold is her smile
And it is for liberty that she yearns
God has blessed me, ma’am
Her rage is like the sea
How can I explain it to you?
I gave birth to a fighter
There was a dead silence
When she declared that she loves
Another woman that fights
For justice in the world
Love is more fertile
Than ignorance, the betrayer
If you insist, and you implore me
To tell you something about her
She is my daughter, the most beautiful
I gave birth to a fighter
An expert told me that in matters of love
The man is for the woman
And the woman for the children
I said, excuse me, sir
I don’t call myself a doctor, or a philosopher
Wake up, sir, from that dream
Woman are not owned by anyone
I gave birth to a fighter
In spite of what they say, we back her
And wherever we go
Our daughter is present
I will be with her always
Until my hour arrives
Until my last dawn
Her hands never get tired
And she founded for me a hope
I gave birth to a fighter
Together, with Enrique,
I gave birth to a fighter
